About ‘Good Vintage’

Good Vintage Jazz Band

The Good Vintage Jazz Band is dedicated to bringing you music from the early years of jazz in New Orleans, Chicago, Harlem, New York and around the world. Join us to celebrate 100 years of jazz since the 1920’s!

Jiri Kripac – cornet/vocal

One of the veterans of Australian jazz, Jiri started playing jazz cornet at age 14 in Czechoslovakia (as it then was). His main influence at the time was Graeme Bell, the grandfather of Australian jazz. He came to Australia in 1969, where he continued playing, becoming a band leader for many ensembles in Sydney, the Far South Coast (he was an originator of the Merimbula Jazz Festival) and the Central Coast of NSW as well as touring internationally. He is now living in Griffith.

Polly Kripac – vocal

Originally from Sydney, Polly has recently moved to Griffith from Avoca Beach. She is a singer, actor and writer and has performed at the Famous Spiegeltent in Melbourne and the Spiegelgarden in Canberra. She has sung with Jiri’s bands, and her own, in Sydney and the Central Coast, as well as internationally and at festivals across Australia. She has a love of old-school jazz and cabaret music and is inspired by artists such as Josephine Baker, Edith Piaf, Django Reinhardt and Duke Ellington.

Stefan Simmonds – banjo/guitar

Stefan has an impressive jazz pedigree. He grew up with vintage jazz and started playing Dixie Jazz guitar and tenor banjo at age 14 with his father’s band. His favourite album was the Cotton Club, inspired by Duke Ellington. His father and godfather, both banjo players, are his greatest inspiration. He has carried on the tradition within his family, playing Dixie Jazz with his brother whenever possible. He lives with his family in Leeton where he is a leading light of the musical community.

Ian Hookway – drums

Drumming has been a passion for Ian since he first picked up the sticks and brushes at age 12. He has played drums in a variety of genres. He played cabaret/country/pub rock for about 10 years and he has played for the past 8 years with local hard rock/pub covers band, Jacks Hit. He is excited to play in the 1920s and 1930s jazz style with Good Vintage.
